Day 505 – Lost City Trek

Second day of the Lost City Trek

Our day started at 5am as everyone woke up to prepare for today’s hike. While people were still getting ready, a massive breakfast was left on the table for those who were ready. We left Cabana de Adan just after 6am.

Once again, today was mainly uphill. The start of the hike was through agricultural lands, with occasional fields on either side of us.

Then we continued into the indigenous lands. This area felt more remote and the foliage surrounding us felt thicker. An hour into the hike, we were given some watermelons as a free snack. As we started hiking again, we met a tourist from Minca, which was completely random. He was on the last day of the trek returning back to Santa Marta.

At 8.30am we stopped at an indigenous building to talk about the culture. Normally an indigenous leader would perform the talk, but he was unavailable today. So our local guide and translator started telling us about the culture. Some of the practises with coca leaves sounded very similar to the practises in Lake Titicaca, which is almost 3,000km away as the crow flies (a few hundred kms more than the distance from Melbourne to Perth).

Close to 11.30am, we stopped at a campsite for another swim in the refreshing (aka freezing) river and lunch. The lunch was tasty with plenty of food to go around.

After lunch, we chilled for an hour before continuing on the hike. As before, we were walking surrounded by thick vegetation. We saw the odd indigenous person walking along the path too.

We stopped a few hours later at our accommodation for the night. This site was similar to the last place, but we had an issue with the number of beds. Four of the couples in the group, including us, had to share a small bunk (smaller than a single bed). There was another swimming spot where most of us had another swim in.

We found out that the group who was in the van with us from Santa Marta were also staying here. After dinner, we played cards well into the night with them, past the lights out time of 9pm. This was a little annoying as we had to navigate the campsite by phone torchlight.
