Day 97 – Siem Reap
After breakfast, we left Golden Square Villa Hotel, and walked 2km to the Angkor National Museum. Here we shared an audio guide between us. We were glad to have gone to the museum before checking our Angkor Wat, as it gives heaps of insight and history.
The information at the exhibits were in both Cambodian and English and there was 2 levels with 8 rooms in total. There was an introduction video in a theatre room, which led to the Gallery of 1,000 Buddha Images, Khmer Civilisation, Religion and Beliefs (Hindu and Buddhist), The Great Khmer Kings, Angkor Wat (with a very cool multimedia presentation and model), Angkor Thom (Churning the ocean of milk), Story from Stones and Ancient Costumes. No cameras or bags are allowed inside the museum.
After spending a few hours in the Museum we walked back towards our hotel. We heard music and thought there was a party, but as we kept walking towards to music, we saw around 50 people exercising/dancing like an outdoor Zumba class. It was cool to see the kids playing soccer and just running around too.
We ended up booking a group tour of Angok Wat for tomorrow from the Information Centre, which included pickup from our hotel. We then did some grocery shopping and found out a bit about Cambodian Riel. 4000 Riel is used as $1USD, and 2000 Riel is $0.50USD which approximately corresponds to the XE Currency App.
We walked towards the touristy district, with night markets and restaurants. It was called Pub Street. The prices were extreme for our budget so we just kept walking home. We also ended up getting a SIM Card from a company called SMART.
