Day 8 – Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
Summary:
Today we woke up at a quite chilly Red Wood Inn for the best breakfast of the trip so far. We then travelled with a tour guide recommended by Redwood Inn for the entire day:
- First we went to the military base at Piduruthalagala Mountain (only opened to tourists recently after the war) which is Sri Lanka’s highest point where we didn’t see much due to the fog
- Followed by a drive down the winding roads to a Souvenir Shop (I can’t remember/find the name but the co-ordinates are
7.05671, 80.69589) which has a nice lookout on the top level for the surrounding area, which includes several waterfalls. - Next we went down to Ramboda Falls which has a hotel built around it. You can take the lift and then a short walk close to the waterfall.
- Then we took a tour of the Damro Tea Factory, which had an informational tour about the entire tea making process and learnt about the Colombo Tea Markets. After the tour you get a tea and an optional cake (you technically only pay for the cake which was delicious)
- The final stop was Gregory Park, which had a small fair around the lake. The lake had several water activities from jetskis to paddle boats.
After getting dropped off at the Inn we walked to town to check out Victoria Park which was unfortunately closed by the time we arrived. Upon walking back we survived an encounter with a barking/ briefly chasing us down dog.
Overall still a good day.
Travelled at the end of August 2018.
