Day 42 – Bangkok
Our hotel Baron Zotel Bangkok is actually one street away from the first place we stayed in Bangkok which was Baron Residence Bangkok, probably the same company. We packed our bags and checked out of the Zotel. The Zotel actually have a tuk tuk service that takes customers to the main road, so leaving our bags behind we used this service to the main road. From there, it was a one minute walk to The Mall Bangkapi for lunch.
At the mall, we decided to buy an Universal Adapter so I could get rid of all the various types of adapters we had. The one we bought is meant to be able to handle the various voltages and frequencies in different countries.
After all our shopping was complete we walked back to the Zotel to pick up our bags and then used the Grab App to call a car. The elderly driver was very nice but when we were almost at our location and his map was telling him to turn, he kept driving straight by. We ended up going around the block 3 times before we told him we will get out and walk.
We were within 5 minutes of the hotel, which is very close to the river. We managed to find a bridge and then walked down a very narrow alley and found the hotel. Once there the door was locked without a receptionist. Luckily we had a local Sim so we called the hotel and they opened up for us. Once there the owner was super friendly, telling us about tours and places to eat. She also gave us heaps of snacks to eat.
The hotel has a large garden and there were not many guests so we were taken to the second floor and given a choice of river or garden views. The river views were just of a corrugated tin roof so we went for the garden view.
The room was spacious with a drinking fountain just outside the room. The hotel 4J Lodge, was apparently newly opened. The bed looked super comfortable so I jumped on expecting a cloud. I was met with what felt like a concrete slab. The bed is super firm which I guess is good for the back.
After settling down we walked back towards the touristy Khao San Road for dinner and ended up booking a tour to Ayutthaya which was another ancient capital. This is meant to be a more touristy Sukhothai. While having dinner there was a tropical downpour.
We then walked back to the hotel. We were a bit concerned about walking down the small alley but it turns out there is a small shop there that locals hang out at so it wasn’t bad at all. Also the shop was a good indicator of when we had to turn. The rain didn’t stop until we were asleep. Will be interesting how tomorrow will be during the tour.
Just a public safety announcement. Don’t get the Salt flavour Colgate toothpaste (Green packaging). Its as horrible as it sounds!
