Day 34 – Sukhothai to Chiang Mai

Today we took the Bus from Sukhothai Old Town Bus Stop to Chiang Mai Bus Terminal. It was the same company (big blue buses) that we used from Bangkok to Sukhothai New Town.

The bus stopped at various points along the way. We typically had a bathroom break or bought some snacks. Once we got the Chiang Mai bus stop there was another horde of drivers wanting to take us. We later found out that it wasn’t tuk tuk drivers. Chiang Mai have a shared taxi service that uses Utes (Pick up trucks) known as Songthaews. They were quoting around 4 times more than our phone app, Grab was showing. We told them we would take a Grab, and they were telling us its illegal.

We later saw a sign saying that Grab cannot enter the bus terminal. Once the Grab came (within 5 minutes)it stayed outside of the terminal so we had to call the driver to work out where they were. The super clean car took us to X Kingdom without drama. Unlike a Grab Taxi the Grab cars only charge the quoted price, so we will try use this service more than the taxis.

X Kingdom is a very cool hostel with nice rooms. The rooms very basic but very cheap and clean and the owners spoke perfect English. She recommended  a place to have lunch close by.

It turned out the location of X Kingdom was also amazing (or “perfectly located”), being close to the Old Town’s Western Gate known as Tha Phae Gate. So we were able to walk around and explore the old city.

Tha Phae Gate / Western Gate

Most of the tourists site were temples. My favourite was a small shrine we stumbled across called Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang
