Day 309 – San Cristobal de las Casas

Learning Spanish and Free Walking Tour

As per the usual now, we woke up early to complete our homework before attending Spanish lessons at SanCris Language School. We were invited to the weekly meet up session, which includes shared snacks with all the students. We bought some donuts along from a bakery. It was cool to have a shared lunch, while attempting to talk in Spanish. The other students are very fluent.

After lunch, we were able to practise our Spanish on a different teacher for an hour before our class began. It was a very intense day of Spanish.

Free Walking Tour

We found a walking tour that runs everyday at 10am and 5pm in both English and Spanish. There are a few companies that offers free walking tours. We took the one that meets by the cross, in Plaza de la Paz.

When we arrived, the guide was talking to everyone in Spanish. Luckily for us, the guide and everyone else, was happy to do the rest of the tour in English. The guide was really good, and the tour mainly focused on places to eat and drink. I would recommend doing the tour on your first day/night in San Cristobal.

From the Plaza de la Paz, which is next to the Cathedral, we walked towards the market. We were given a quick run down on what to buy. Then we continued to another church, inside the market.

The tour includes, coffee tasting, Pox (alcohol made from corn) tasting and ends in a brewery for beer tasting. Typically there is chocolate tasting, but unfortunately the place was closed when we went.

Besides the tastings, there is also a nice bar with a cool view and a traditional garment shop, where we we told about various traditional garments.

The tour last for 3.5 hours ending around 8:30pm. After the tour we walked back to the main walking street, where we were going to meet up with some of the other Spanish students and instructors from San Cris. We had some drinks and dinner.
