Day 233 – Doha
Today we went shopping at some shopping center’s (Malls) that were walking distance to our accommodation. As we were leaving the heavens opened up and we got drenched. The roads also didn’t seem to handle the downpour well, which made walking a pain.
After a few hours the rain had stopped and we had dried of. We drove to the National Museum of Qatar. The building itself is an architectural marvel. It was only opened a week or so before we arrived. Entrance is 50 QAR / $19.55 AUD per person, and trust me, it’s worth the price. The museum is well thought out and covers prehistoric times right up until the oil boom in Qatar.
You can easily spend half a day in this excellent museum, which is honestly one of the best museums I have ever seen. The massive walls are covered with projections from multiple projectors. In one room (the one on oil), I counted over 20 projectors. It was amazing. If you do go, come in the morning to avoid the massive lines. When we arrived we could walk straight into the museum. When we left, the line went all the way into the car park. This could die down over time, as it was only a week old when we went there.
Next, we decided to see how the other half live. We went over to the more exclusive part of town, known as the Pearl. Personally, the Pearl, was a bit of a let down. Yes there was fancy cars and boats, but there didn’t seem to be much atmosphere as the shops and streets were quiet / empty. We just went into an empty cafe and ordered some coffee.
After this, we used the family friends local knowledge to end up at a Dosa Shop (Indian shop I think), that serves 2 meter long dosa. It was cool to try, but its sort of like getting a meter long pizza in Melbourne. I feel like its more for show.
