Day 202 – Wanaka (Milford Sound)

Today we left our accommodation in Wanaka at 5:15am, so that we could cover the 340 km journey to Milford Sound. As the sun rose, we were once again rewarded with immensely beautiful scenery around every bend. It was raining for most of the day, which created thousands of waterfalls all along the mountain ranges through the Fiordland National Park, which was an added bonus.

We arrived at Milford Sound just before midday, where it was also pouring down with rain. We had booked a cruise with a company called Go Orange using bookme.co.nz for $47 NZD / $44.24 AUD per person (The website occasionally has special deals all around New Zealand). Booking directly with Go Orange would cost $55 NZD / $51.95 AUD (https://www.goorange.co.nz/en/experiences/go-cruise/milford-sound-cruise/).

Despite the heavy rain, the cruise was amazing. We were reminded of Halong Bay in Vietnam (Day 134 and Day 135), though each experience had an unique charm. Some of the highlights include the massive waterfall that the cruise gets very close to and just being on the top deck during the brief moments without rain left us with amazing views.

On the drive back, the rain eased up at certain points and we were able to enjoy more amazing views. Honestly beautiful anywhere you look.

We drove back to our accommodation in Wanaka tired after over 9 hours of driving, feeling very cold, but with the clichéd zero regrets thanks to amazing views throughout the day.
