Day 164 – Vang Vieng

Blue Lagoon 3

Today we met up with our new travelling companions from Phonsavan. We walked around town looking for a tuk tuk driver who was willing to take us to Blue Lagoon 3 for a day trip. We had one driver who would not agree on our price, but he just kept following us around the block several times. Finally we found a tuk tuk driver who was sleeping in this vehicle. Maybe because he was startled as I woke him, he agreed to take us there and back for 150,000 LAK / $24.49 AUD for four people.

Along the way, we saw heaps of tours, going past in small two seater buggies, which looked really cool. The road was rocky and dusty. It took a surprisingly long time to get to the lagoon. Once there, we only had to pay 10,000 LAK / $1.63 AUD per person to enter. We were a little disappointed with the Lagoon as it appears to be walled in concrete. We were expecting something more natural. However, it wasn’t really too crowded (the reason we bypassed Blue Lagoons 1 and 2) and the water still looked amazing.

We first decided to explore the nearby cave, which actually goes really deep. There appears to be a large water flow inside the cave, which we could hear, but failed to see. We then turned back toward the entrance.

Along the way back to the lagoon, we took another detour to check out the View Point. It wasn’t too far away or hard to climb. Once we climbed a ladder, we were welcomed into a shallow cave, from where we had nice views of the rice fields and mountains.

After a few minutes we climbed down to the lagoon. The lagoon’s water was cooling and blue. There were tubes, bamboo rafts, two jumping points and the ability to hire kayaks and life vests. We spent some time enjoying the water and just chilling after all that walking around. It was an awesome way to spend an afternoon.

Regretfully, we had to leave the lagoon and get back onto the tuk tuk as the driver looked a little impatient, but he didn’t say anything. We got dropped off in town and had lunch, washed up and then once again met up to have drinks by the river. A very look yet (relatively) expensive place to chill.
