Day 154 – Luang Prabang

Amazing Kuang Si Waterfalls

Today we went on a half day trip to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. We arranged the tour from Downtown Backpackers Hostel 2, for around 35,000 LAK / $5.72 AUD per person for a shared van (I can’t remember the exact price). Once we got there, we were given two hours to enjoy the falls.

Firstly, the guide collected the Kuang Si Waterfall Entrance Fee 20,000 LAK / $3.36 and then we were let loose. The first stop is the Bear Sanctuary that is located on the site. The bears appear to be well looked after.

Then we walked to the falls. The water is so amazing. The turquoise colour is more amazing in real life than these photos. I was in love. The first set of pools / falls is a nice area to take a dip in. We crossed the wooden bridge and took the jungle route towards the main falls.

Honestly the main falls are so beautiful. We spent some time soaking in the atmosphere before climbing to the top of the falls. The hike is steep and if its been raining, can get really muddy. Luckily for us, it was dry. The views from the top are not great, as the waterfall is blocked by the tree line. We descended down the opposite side which was nice, as the stairs are overflowing with water.

We then regretfully had to leave, but its honestly a place you can spend more than a couple of hours, with a swim and a picnic. We were dropped off on the market street which is considered city centre, which was very close to our hostel.

We decided to walk around town, and ended up at the Traditional Folk Story Telling building. We bought tickets for the daily show at 6:30pm. The tickets were 50,000 LAK / $8.18 AUD per person, which is a bit pricey for what you get in my opinion, but the show itself was done well. Its a younger man, telling a handful of stories, and an elderly man playing on a traditional Laotian instrument. The show runs for an hour. He has a thick accent, which can be difficult at times to understand, but for most part, he was totally understandable for us.

After this we headed back to town for dinner before returning to the hostel.
