Day 125 – Dalat to Hoi An
Experienced our first night bus
Today we had to check out from Tigon Dalat Hostel. We packed our bags and had a few hours until our bus. We decided to head into town and explore the area surrounding the Ho Xuan Huong Lake area again. While at the decorated Hasfarm Roundabout we witnessed a motor bike crash. There was no serious injury, with both parties just getting up and riding their separate ways.
After this we headed back to the hostel to await our pick up. After calling the travel agent, we found out that our pick up was running 15 minutes late. Eventually a very nice van rolled up and we got on, only to find out that there was only one seat for the both of us. The pick up van was overbooked, which is not a good sign.
The van dropped us off at the Dalat bus station, which was the same place the bus from Ho Chi Minh City had stopped at (Day 122). From here we got onto a sleeper bus, with our bags and we were rudely told by the driver to move to the back of the bus. All our bags were stacked in the back aisle too instead of in the storage locker under the bus. The storage locker was getting loaded with boxes instead. A group of locals then got on the bus before we left.
We ended up stopping several times, and every time a process of boxes getting loaded and unloaded occurred. As we were in the back of the bus for the first time, every time someone opened the toilet door, the odour would drift into the main cabin. Not great! I fell asleep, but kept waking up when the driver slammed on the brakes and I would be rocking around in the seat (no seat belts on these). Also the number of locals kept increasing, with locals sitting in the aisles by the end of the journey.
Around 1:00am we stopped and all the locals got off. There is no announcement or anything, so we were baffled as to where we were. Once we realised this was a dinner stop, we got off. We ordered a chicken pho, which was the only option, which tasted nice. After this, we got back on the bus and we arrived in Hoi An at 4:30am.
