About Us
Hey There,
Welcome to Travel the Gap!
I am happy that you are interested in following our journey or just getting to know about us better.
This blog is mainly a travel journal. At the time of writing this we have travelled to 18 countries over 14 months and our end date is still undetermined.
On the occasions I have free time, I have also decided to make some guides. I plan to include information that I could not particularly find online in a simple format. While we are travelling full time, the information will be accurate as of when we travelled. I hope you find them useful for your travels too.
The origin for this blog is quite simple. My old supervisor asked me for some attractions to see in the USA. He knew I had been there as part of a work trip four years ago. As I looked at old photos from the trip, I had no idea what some of them were showing or what I had done there.
A house…maybe someone famous lives here???
And I will never be able to find the restaurant that had this amazing Deep Fried Cheesecake!
Since I knew this trip would be jammed packed full of activities and photos, I didn’t want it to all be forgotten in a few years’ time. Therefore, I decided to write it all down on an easy to share platform.
I am a thirty-year-old former engineer who was working in manufacturing in Melbourne, Australia. I was born in Sri Lanka, to amazing Sri Lankan parents, but we moved to Australia before I could even speak. My beautiful wife is a former optometrist in her twenties who grew up in New Zealand. We both really enjoyed our jobs, but we enjoyed rocking up to work with resignation letters even more. After saving up for a few years, we are travelling solely on our savings. I handle the money and this blog. My wife handles everything else.
We love nature, hiking, anywhere we can swim, ancient ruins and free-range wildlife. We also love exploring by ourselves for the cheapest price possible. The more we make our savings last, the longer we can stay travelling!
Hiking along the Te Henga Walkway in New Zealand
Ancient columns at Egypt’s Karnak Temple
Amazing fresh water Cenote Zaci in Mexico
As we travel, we are witnessing the kindness of random people. There have been so many instances when random people have offered simple things; from a friendly greeting or conversation on the street, to a free ride or a beer. Most people around the world are awesome!
As a small gesture back to the world, you may realise that this website is low on ads. I will leave that to others on the internet. I do have an affiliate program with Booking.com. If you wish to support this website so we can cover running costs, please use the link for your next adventure (it won’t cost you anything extra).
Otherwise, thanks for reading this About page. We are always happy to receive comments and feedback on the journals or the guides, so please contact us whenever you want to reach us.
